Missions at Providence

God calls all believers in the Lord Jesus Christ to understand and embrace the Great Commission as our own personal mandate. Believers are called to "...go and make disciples of all nations" (Matt. 28:19). We fulfill this mandate by living our lives fully devoted to the Lord Jesus through our daily work and vocations, as well as through our church and community involvement. Listen to the voice of Jesus, and He will guide you to those He wants you to meet...at home, at work, and around the world.

At Providence, we look for opportunities to share the love of Jesus Christ with the world. We have had folks from our congregation participate in missions endeavors overseas, and most recently in the country of Moldova in Eastern Europe. We also participate in local missions opportunities, and have helped in the clean-up efforts from Hurricane Katrina, in the Gulfport, Mississippi area of the country (see photo below).

Missions Organizations

We have several missions organizations and groups that meet regularly to increase missions awareness and to pray for missionaries. We have missions education for all ages, from babies to senior adults. Our two umbrella missions organizations are the WMU (Women on Mission) and the Baptist Men. Listed below is an overview of each of the missions classes we offer.

The WMU focuses on teaching five principles:
  • Learn about missions
  • Pray for missionaries
  • Give to missions projects
  • Participate in missions
  • Participate in the work of the church

The following five groups meet regularly to study what is happening in missions around the world:
  • Commission Keepers
  • Joy Group
  • RSW/Alice Fields
  • Madge Dudley Group
  • Sister in Christ
Please check the church calendar to see when each of these groups meet during the month. You can also call the church office (804.642.5812) for more information.

Acteens is for girls in the 6th–12th grades. Acteens learn what it means to live a mission’s lifestyle by learning that God’s call is for every believer. Acteens provides a framework for teenage girls to learn about missions, pray for missionaries, and to have hands-on opportunities to be involved in missions.

The GA’s (Girls in Action) is for girls in the 1st—6th grades. They explore the world of mission by doing creative ministry projects. They also have slumber parties, and have regular group sessions where they can relate to other girls. The GA’s learn that they are valuable to God and can be used by God to fulfill his great commission. The GA’s meet Wednesday nights from 6:30-7:30 pm.

Mission Friends is for babies to kindgarten aged children. In Missions Friends, children learn about God's love for each of us and how all people need to hear of God's love. They learn at a very young age about Jesus love for them and for the world. Missions Friends meet on Wednesday nights from 6:30-7:30 pm.

The Baptist Men on Mission (BMEN) helps men acquire skills to prepare them for God's mission. BMEN helps men become the churchmen so desperately needed and so sadly underdeveloped in many men's ministry groups. Rather than focusing entirely on men's needs, BMEN helps men realize their roles as the leaders and mission champions of their church.
A church-based men's organization provides an environment where men can be changed by the power of God. As men become spiritually awakened, they become active, godly men. They become workers in the church, ministers in the community, and better financial stewards. They disciple their children and lead their households, thus becoming godly fathers and husbands.
The BMEN have a monthly breakfast on the 3rd Saturday of each month. After breakfast, the men usually participate in a project for an individual or a family within the community that have a special need.

A Royal Ambassador (RA) is a boy in grades 1-6 committed to living out the RA Pledge. This pledge is part of personal and chapter (group of RAs) accountability. The RA Motto, "We are Ambassadors for Christ," not only gives the organization its name, but also gives the boys and leaders a lifestyle goal. This motto is taken from Scripture, specifically II Corinthians 5:20. The RA's meet on Wednesday nights from 6:30-7:30 pm.
